Recovery After Breast Surgery

Recovery following breast surgery varies between individuals, but most patients make a good recovery over 6 to 8 weeks.

• Begin gentle activities of daily living (ADLs) from the day after surgery, as tolerated.
• Take short walks from Day 1, gradually increasing your activity level.
• Avoid prolonged periods of sitting or lying down during the day.
• Listen to your body and rest when needed.

For the first 6 weeks, avoid:

• Heavy lifting
• Strenuous upper body exercise
• Repetitive upper body activities such as: 
  • Gardening
  • Vacuuming or heavy housework
  • Caring duties involving lifting
  • Gym-based upper body workouts

• Wear your TED stockings for 2 weeks after surgery unless advised otherwise.
• Remove daily for washing and skin checks.

• Wear your surgical bra continuously (24 hours a day, 7 days a week) for 6 weeks, including overnight.
• Remove only for washing and personal hygiene.

Take regular pain relief as required:

• Paracetamol
• NSAID (such as ibuprofen), if suitable for you
• Codeine or equivalent stronger medication if required

Follow the instructions provided with your medications and avoid exceeding the recommended doses.

• Most patients can return to driving after 2 to 3 weeks.
• You should only drive when you can perform an emergency stop comfortably and safely.
• Consider checking with your motor insurance provider before resuming driving.

• Light duties or a phased return to work may be possible after 2 to 3 weeks, depending on the type of work you do.
• More physically demanding occupations may require additional recovery time.

• Clinic Nurse review: approximately 1 week after surgery
• Consultant review: approximately 2 to 3 weeks after surgery
• Additional appointments can be arranged sooner if required (SOS review)

• Increasing redness, swelling or discharge from the wound
• Fever or feeling unwell
• Significant bleeding
• Severe or worsening pain
• Any concerns about your recovery

Most patients can expect a full recovery within 6 to 8 weeks. Recovery may take longer following more extensive procedures.
